Folk Ensemble is a new professional ensemble that works with Danish folk music in a broad sense – both traditional music and newer compositions. The ensemble consists of five experienced musicians with roots in the folk music community and with ties to the Southern Danish Academy of Music in Esbjerg, where Denmark’s only folk music education is also anchored.

The project is supported by the Region of Southern Denmark’s Culture Fund and will operate as a pilot project in 2024–2025, with activities spread throughout the region. The ensemble performs in many different contexts – at schools, venues, cultural centers, music schools and institutions.

Why an ensemble for folk music?
In Denmark, there are several professional basic ensembles within classical music and jazz. However, there has not previously been an ensemble with a focus on folk music. With the establishment of Folk Ensemble, a professional platform has now been created where the genre can be developed and disseminated at a high artistic level.
Folk music is an important part of Danish musical history and cultural heritage. It has shaped the musical landscape that many people grow up in – even if you don’t necessarily think about it. With a permanent ensemble, the music becomes more accessible and present in the present, even for those who have not previously encountered it.
